“Environmental Data Justice and Decolonial Approaches to Environmental Violence”
Abstract
This talk describes the research and activities at the Technoscience Research Unit, which is a member of the Semaphore-KMDI Research Cluster. The Technoscience Research Unit is a home for work on social justice approaches to technoscience studies, including an Indigenous-led lab as well as projects that bring data justice and environmental justice together. The talk will share its appraoches to lab protocols and community building, its vision and practice of environmental data justice, as well as its work developing decolonial approaches to environmental violence.
About Our Speaker
Dr. Michelle Murphy is the Director of the Technoscience Research Unit and Professor of History and Women and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto, as well as a lead editor of the jouranl Catalyst: Feminism, Theory, Technoscience, a founding member of the Environmental Data Governance initiative, and a co-organizer of the Technoscience Salon. She is the author of three books with Duke University Press, the most recent titled The Economization of Life (2017). Her current work rethinkings our understanding of chemical exposures towards projects of decolonial environmental justice on the lower Great Lakes. She is urban Métis from Winnipeg.
