Printing Community Project

The GLAM Incubator is a joint initiative, co-led by the Faculty of Information and the KMDI, aimed at supporting the launch of new cross-sector initiatives that explore the innovations, opportunities, and challenges of emerging technologies for the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, museums and other cultural institutions) sector. Among its inaugural pilot projects is a new partnership led by Dr. Claire Battershill , Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Information.

The “Printing Community: Participatory Research, Artistic Production, and Historical Education in Local Museum Settings” project, which was recently awarded a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant, will see Dr. Battershill partnering with the Uxbridge Historical Museum on an exciting collaboration focused on the development of an exhibition and a series of workshops.

The KMDI is specifically supporting the Printing Community Project’s exploration of a remarkable new DIY technology called the Provisional Press (pictured above), which allows for portable and easy-to-use demonstrations of the printing press process. The Provisional Press Kit comes with all the parts needed to build a sturdy wooden press at home (or at the museum!). Designed to be an affordable tabletop press, the Provisional Press can last through thousands of prints. More on the Provisional Press here: https://www.provisionalpress.com/.

The KMDI Makerspace will acquire one or more Provisional Press Kits and host a series of workshops and demos focused on building, using, and mobilizing it in a range of applications – from research and teaching, to community outreach.

Stay tuned for updates!
